Εco-poly

As cities expand and become even more populous, the coexistence of people, nature and the built environment is challenged. Kypseli is a typical example of a neighborhood that expresses the exaggeration of spatial density, lacking green spaces and a vision of the future. What can be done to reimagine Kypseli as a sustainable, green, multicultural hub? Our proposal introduces the poly-making philosophy. [”Poly” or “Poli” is the Greek definition of “multi(a lot) or “city” respectively]. Poly-making is defined by the character of Kypseli, an outbreak of information itself, and involves a series of interventions concerning the built fabric and the mobility system. Interventions on the built fabric aim for the reconfiguration and optimization of the existing building stock. This includes reusing the abandoned buildings as adaptable communal spaces and changing the core of the poly-residence by revitalizing the rooftops, activating the ground floors and breathing life into the atriums, thus creating superblocks, which promote a sustainable future that is combined with the vivid social activity of Kypseli. Poly-streets policy concerns the mobility network, the linking factor, and aims to improve the streetscape with multi-functionality, through the provision of high-quality accessible services. It involves the establishment of additional public space with priority given to pedestrians and cyclists. This urban acupuncture forms an Eco-Poly, a social hub that is green and resilient. We strive to transform this exuberant environment into a sustainable place for urban living through showcasing what Kypseli already has and adding to it.
