Poly-blocks

By studying closely the urban fabric of Kypseli, we have categorized the atriums (aka acalyptos) based on their accessibility, the percentage of green and square meters of common space. In an effort to reshape the Athenian urban block into a self-sustainable system, we intend to add solar panels, a rainwater capture system and a set of batteries to store the solar energy that is saved up. A set of scaffoldings that will be placed on the blind walls of polykatoikias will introduce a new vertical public space with vegetation. The common space of the acalyptos is reimagined as a meeting point for the residents, where cultivating and other communal activities take place. New public parking lots that will provide chargers for electric cars will be established while vacant or abandoned buildings will be reused as eco labs, exhibition centers etc. Our goal is to maximize the functionality of the existing urban blocks through simple yet effective gestures.
