  • By detecting Kypseli’s important points of interest we are creating new connections between them. The project uses one of the most underused, yet multifunctional natural resources available in the urban fabric, its soil capital. The full project uses up to 66% of the excavation soil from nearby metro station works on Kanari square. Soil is the connector between the different realms of private and public space. It is used as a design tool, in green facades, in urban farming and to create a new landscape. It is going to turn Kypseli to a prototype SOIL CAPITAL of Athens.

Fokionos Negri: the New Flow

Fokionos Negri street is the main leisure area for the neighborhood. The space is compartmentalized into closed green areas, pedestrian spaces, sitting areas and, privatized public spaces for the use of restaurants and bars, which block the street and limit its uses. The mineral layout of the street is covering a rich natural capital of the neighborhood, the Levidi stream. The stream is partially resurfaced and it is defining the space around it. The trees and the flower beds are the memory of the old Fokionos Negri. The strategy focuses in making Fokionos Negri greener and more permeable by keeping the footprint of the old flower beds. The flower beds are expanded and the railings are removed. The green space can now be shared by the pedestrians. The soil creates a new permeable curvy topography that forms resting areas, new pathways and playgrounds. The ground topography is designed to redirect the water towards the greener parts of the street and to refill the underground watersheds that feed the Levidi stream. Water is also used to bring many environmental benefits, like water depuration through aquatic vegetation, temperature reduction and water resilience in periods of drought.
