  • By detecting Kypseli’s important points of interest we are creating new connections between them. The project uses one of the most underused, yet multifunctional natural resources available in the urban fabric, its soil capital. The full project uses up to 66% of the excavation soil from nearby metro station works on Kanari square. Soil is the connector between the different realms of private and public space. It is used as a design tool, in green facades, in urban farming and to create a new landscape. It is going to turn Kypseli to a prototype SOIL CAPITAL of Athens.

Shared Spaces - Shared Energy

High density is one of the biggest urban challenges that Kypseli faces today. While there is a dramatic need for public and green spaces in the neighbourhood, the buildings themselves are not used to their full potential. A transposable Plug-In model that aims to create new common spaces and at the same time a way to optimize the layout of polykatoikias’ apartments to better fit Kypseli’s population's needs is proposed, while integrating green energy production. Neighbor buildings and inner courtyard spaces can be connected through new structures that aim to fill the voids between buildings, spaces on the roofs or even the façades. This is a key element of this model, as it allows it to adapt to the different types of polykatoikias anywhere in Athens. The structure can host spaces to work, create, meditate, play socialize and strengthen the community sense. Cinema sessions, concerts and different events will be organized again, honoring the cultural tradition of the neighborhood. Latest solar technology will help these new outdoor structures produce energy for the building’s needs. These are treated with AuReus systemⓇ, which consists of a colorful surface made out of waste crops and a plastic type base that has the capacity to convert UV light into electricity. The structures are made reusing existing scaffolding stocks that can be found locally and contribute to the circular economy of the city
